Eight Seconds
The alarm in Building C’s containment lab lasts eight seconds. Then stops. On January 3, 2026, a lethally engineered pathogen escapes a federally contracted facility in Dalton, Georgia. Aerosolized and unreported, it reaches workers in the plant. Within days, the first victim is dead.
Dr. Nora Phillips, the CDC's Deputy Director, flags the cluster on her first screen of the morning. The mortality rate is catastrophic, the presentation unknown. She requests immediate deployment. Instead, her findings are suppressed, the outbreak is reclassified as a localized agricultural exposure, and she is fired for insubordination.
Unemployed but unbowed, Nora assembles a desperate coalition on her kitchen table: an ICU nurse who documented the dying on a private laptop, a fired virologist who proves the pathogen is engineered, an OSHA investigator threatened with ruin, and a mole still inside the gutted agency.
Racing against a lethal curve, they gather evidence outside a crippled system and find a journalist brave enough to publish the truth: 63 dead and the 44 who should have lived. Eight Seconds is a blistering thriller about the price of silence and a nation that dismantled its own public health defenses.
The truth doesn't wait for permission. Neither does this pathogen.

What Readers Are Saying
I still can't shake the early scene where Nora Phillips desperately requests emergency help, only to hit a cold, automated denial from her own agency. Bob Clark perfectly captures how the real danger in a public health crisis is often the broken system itself. His fast, heart-pounding writing skips dry procedural jargon entirely, plunging you straight into the human toll of administrative cowardice. Watching Nora transform from a quiet rule-follower into someone who actively dismantles an obstructive, failing framework is incredibly rewarding. The narrative perfectly mirrors the intense, high-stakes reality of having to force critical actions through when standard operations collapse completely. If you love thrillers that expose systemic vulnerabilities while delivering relentless, intelligent problem-solving, this is a deeply satisfying and thrilling read.
Mong CjHits a little too close to home but I can appreciate a great book when I read one! Eight seconds shone light into the human species and how fragile humanity really is. The world building transports you into this tenuous balance of humanity between life and how easily it can shift when it rests in the wrong hands. If you like nail biters, I definitely think you should check this out!
Ana AThis is one of those stories that’s a bit too real, too close to home. The multiple perspectives provided at ground level of a lethal outbreak were extremely eye-opening and shocking, yet totally believable. In some form or another, we’ve all seen firsthand how efficiencies break down when resources are cut, and we know the growing fear that our avoidable nightmares will eventually come to life. The narrative truly takes you on a ride through multiple emotions, painting a stark picture of societal vulnerability. It is a haunting reflection of our current anxieties regarding public health and infrastructure. I found it impossible to put down, a polished, gripping, and necessary read for anyone fascinated by the fragility of our modern world.
